Organizers have brought in two success stories for the keynote sessions at the 2008 Super Floral Show, June 17-20 in Orlando, Fla. First, at Wednesday’s luncheon, attendees will hear growth strategies from Jim McCann, founder and CEO of 1-800-Flowers.com.
As the perfect follow-up to one of Mr. McCann’s suggestions to look to other industries for growth ideas, the next day at the Keynote Breakfast, attendees will hear how The Walt Disney Company has mastered people management in the amusement park industry. Facilitator Tom Thomson will convey how to adapt Disney’s techniques to the floral industry. Here is a preview of what these presenters will share.

These are stressful times for the floral industry, but out of this adversity, Mr. McCann hopes to see change for the better. He believes that from challenging times new paradigms can emerge if people don’t allow themselves to get caught up in the negativism of those who say, “That can’t be done.”
When he entered the floral market, Mr. McCann says he didn’t know what couldn’t be done. As a result, he tried and found success with things more experienced individuals in the industry would have said were impossible.
Mr. McCann says he hopes these challenging times also will serve as a catalyst to fuse together two different floral distribution channels—mass market and retail florists—for the greater good. He points out that, while the two have some similarities and over time have come to serve primarily the same clientele, their infrastructures are different. It is these differences that he believes can make the industry stronger. If the strong leadership from both sides becomes less resistant to working together and more intent on improving products and the industry as a whole, he says, they can pull together the strengths of both for the betterment of all.
Mr. McCann hopes those who attend his session will get a feel for how much fun he and his company are having and go away understanding that now is the “time to make things happen.” Instead of dwelling on the problems, he says: “Let’s go do something about it.”

Disney techniques
One of the biggest challenges for any industry is managing people. Therefore, Super Floral Show organizers are bringing in an expert on this topic—The Walt Disney Company—to share its proven methods with the floral industry.
In 1986, The Walt Disney Company premiered its Disney Approach to People Management program at Disney Institute, the professional development arm of the company. For The Super Floral Show, Disney Institute has consolidated its 31/2-day people management program into a keynote presentation, facilitated by Mr. Thomson. Participants will learn how Disney recruits, selects, trains, rewards and recognizes its more than 62,000 “Cast Members” (Disney employees).
For this modified program, Mr. Thomson will create a training session, similar to the one experienced by those who attend Disney’s program, through the use of video clips and stories. The goal is to provide participants with useful business practices that are easily adaptable to their floral businesses.
